When the first employee time clock was made, it had but one motive: to record the time when employee entered the factory and when an employee left the factory. This mechanical employee time clock would stamp day and time information on a fat paper card, hence the name 'time card'. This gave the factory owner an official record of the hours each employee worked.

The time card save the owner of the companies by making sure that each employee worked the number of hours whatever had determined by the companies. Time cards also save the employees by capturing the exact number of hours they worked, making it much more difficult for employers to cheat them out of their wages.

Attendance tracking formula continued to modern with smaller electrical time clocks eventually replacing the old monotones one. Before time cards even had 'time in' and 'time out' places mentioned on them already, so workers did have to carefully line up the time card in just the exact place. Companies’ owners and employees were no longer interested in exact time tracking system. The government now stepped in to help the companies in this regard and standardize the level of process. Now computers have become more advanced so has timecard software available in the market. Attendance of present employees tracking is more easier as vacation, sickness, and personal leave time can now be itself stored in a data. Employee time clock computers can be linked together with time card data maintained in a centralized location, yet accessible from all.

Time and attendance process has come a long way since many years but the motive to record the time an employee starts work and the time an employee stops work remained same.
